Nintendo today announced a huge price drop for their recently launched 3DS handheld system. The price of the unit is falling from $250 to a much more affordable $170. Personally, the system should have launched at $200 which would have been much more attractable than the extra $50 they were trying to squeeze out of people. Clearly Nintendo could have done it that way, if in only a few months they are going to drop it to $170.
The price drop is coming at a great time for the system as the more desirable games are starting to build up for the system. Star Fox 3D, Kid Icarus, and Super Mario 3D are all coming soon for the system. I’m just wondering why they chose to drop the price now for the system rather than wait until closer to the holidays. With those bigger games coming a few people would have been persuaded to pay the $250 that were waiting for games to show up, but now the patient can save themselves the $80 and still get those games.
For those who already have the system, Nintendo is going to reward them with 10 free Gameboy Advance games, and 10 free NES games from their online store. Provided that you go online with the system before the price drop goes into effect.
The price drop will take effect on August 12th. My recommendation personally is wait till then to get the system if you were on the fence before. The free games are a random assortment, and more than likely have already been played to death.
